Bruce Springsteen on “The American Promise”

Bruce Springsteen is a true American patriot. He’s been singing songs about the American experience for decades. He describes America as a “House of Dreams”:

“America remains a repository of hopes and possibilities and desires. And despite the terrible erosion of our standing in the world, accomplished by our recent administration, we remain for many, many people this house of dreams.

And 1,000 George Bushes and 1,000 Dick Cheneys will never be able to tear that house down. They will, however, be leaving office dropping the national tragedies of Katrina, Iraq, and the financial crisis in our laps.

Our sacred house of dreams has been abused, it’s been looted, and it’s been left in a terrible state of disrepair. It needs care. It needs saving. And it needs defending against those that will sell it down the river for power and a quick buck. It needs a citizenry with strong arms, hearts, and minds… to help us build our house again.” – Bruce Springsteen

Quote of the Day: John Meacham

“…it seems only reasonable and patriotic to hold candidates for high office to high standards. Elitism in this sense is not about educational or class credentials, not about where you went to school or whether you use “summer” as a verb. It is, rather, about the pursuit of excellence no matter where you started out in life. Jackson, Lincoln, Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan and Clinton were born to ordinary families, but they spent their lives doing extraordinary things, demonstrating an interest in, and a curiosity about, the world around them. This is much less evident in Palin’s case.” – John Meacham, Newsweek, 10/13/08
